CALL SENATOR VARUN GHOSH ABOUT AI DATA CENTRES
The Senate inquiry into AI data centres is holding hearings in Canberra tomorrow to hear from big tech.
Labor Senator Varun Ghosh is the committee’s deputy chair, the most senior government member on the committee and he will have a critical voice in the recommendations.
Let’s make it loud and clear to him that communities across the continent want a moratorium on data centres and strong national laws.
He needs to hear from you today. Below are some talking points to help you with your call.
TIPS FOR MAKING YOUR PHONE CALL
-
Hi my name is (insert name), how are you today (be clear and respectful with your call)
I'm calling about tomorrow's Senate inquiry on AI data centres. I have serious concerns about what's happening across the continent and I need you to hear them before decisions are made.
-
Talk to your concerns now. Feel free to add your concerns they may include:
Lack of consent from Traditional Owners
Lack of consent from the community
Water use
Energy use
AI generally
Driving inflation and rising household costs
-
I believe there should be a moratorium on these centres shouldn’t proceed until six things are guaranteed:
Consent from Traditional Owners: no site moves forward without free, prior, and informed consent from the Traditional Owners.
A new strong approval process: no rubber stamps for approvals. A rigorous, transparent assessment of environmental and community impact
100% renewable energy: all data centres must be powered by new 100% renewable energy not coal and gas
Recycled water used: a closed loop system where water is recycled and no local drinking water is used. Best practice water use is enforced
Protection of sacred sites: that all data centres across the country including Weddell in the NT is protecting sacred sites and springs
An AI data centre regulator with teeth: an Independent regulator empowered to audit, penalise, and shut down non-compliant operations.

I hope Senator Ghosh can ensure strong recommendations for a data centre moratorium to protect communities.
