The National Cabinet meets tomorrow to decide rules that should protect the community from big tech data centres. 

Queensland and the NT are blocking water protection and renewable energy requirements and instead want to use data centres as an excuse to prolong dirty coal and gas projects.  

That means tomorrow in the meeting NSW and Victoria hold the balance of power. Their support will lock in strong rules. Their silence will mean coal and gas corporations will win. 

They need to hear from you today. Below our some talking points to help you with your call.

TIPS FOR MAKING YOUR PHONE CALL

    • Hi my name is (insert name), how are you today (be clear and respectful with your call) 

    • I'm calling about tomorrow's National Cabinet meeting on AI data centre regulations. I have serious concerns about what's happening in (New South Wales / Victoria), and I need you to hear them before decisions are made.

  • Talk to your concerns now. Feel free to add your concerns they may include: 

    • Lack of consent from Traditional Owners

    • Lack of consent from the community 

    • Water use

    • Energy use

    • AI generally 

  • I believe these centres shouldn’t proceed until six things are guaranteed:

    • Consent from Traditional Owners: No site moves forward without free,prior, and informed consent from the Traditional Owners. 

    • A new strong approval process: No rubber stamps for approvals. A rigorous, transparent assessment of environmental and community impact

    • 100% renewable energy: All data centres must be powered by 100% renewable energy not coal and gas 

    • Recycled water used: A closed loop system where water is recycled and no local drinking water is used. Best practice water use is enforced

    • Protection of sacred sites: That all data centres across the country including Weddell in the NT is protecting sacred sites and springs

    • An AI data centre regulator with teeth: An Independent regulator empowered to audit, penalise,and shut down non-compliant operations.

  • The Federal Government is prepared to legislate these rules if there is still opposition from states.

    I hope (NSW/Victoria) leads with strength rather than caving to industry pressure and protect community, water and country
